The Samsung World Cyber Games (WCG) 2003 USA finals took place at the Irvine Spectrum in Irvine, California, from Tuesday, August 19 through Thursday, August 21. Players entered the competition from around the United States. The winners of this competition are continuing on to South Korea for the eventual finals, where they will compete with players from around the world.

One of the premier weekend hangouts in the Orange County area, the Irvine Spectrum is a huge, outdoor shopping and entertainment center. It has continued to grow over the last 5+ years with large new sections of stores being added regularly. There are now even shuttle trains available to carry people from their cars to the mall because the parking lots have expanded so much.

The competition was held in a sizable tent in the parking lot. You might imagine a circus tent or something similar, but it was actually just a large tent complete with power, a huge collection of computers, and more. California is very hot during the summer, but you wouldn't know it from being in this tent, because the tent featured air conditioning! An air conditioned tent, you say? It was actually a pretty good setup considering this was normally a hot parking lot. You wouldn't expect to find that many computers and players in that area, not to mention a selection of potted trees, which were used for decoration.

Inside the tent there were rows of computers set up. Each row was for a different game. There were gigantic, very nice (and likely expensive) monitors for players to watch and play big games. Various media people attended to take pictures and report on the event. There were prizes for spectators and a row of people who made announcements and commented on the big matches. Well-known Warcraft III players such as Ir0nClad, Maynard (LordHelmet), and others, as well as other people from the Blizzard community, attended the competition. Since Blizzard Entertainment is located in Irvine, some Blizzard team members stopped by and took pictures. Blizzard reps also watched games and met with some of the players.

There were a lot of spectators, many of whom can be seen in some of the pictures we took. After each round, finalists exited the competition area and in some cases stayed to discuss the games with the people who had watched them play.

It was a great event, and Blizzard hopes to attend similar events in the future.
